About this cartoon: California's governor, Gavin Newsom, faces a recall election organized by Republicans who can't get elected statewide anymore and are looking for a "back door" way to get into office, exploiting the state's recall process against a governor not accused of any crimes or serious misbehavior. The leading GOP candidate wants to remove all mask and vaccination requirements, undoing all the hard work Newsom has done to keep the state's COVID-19 numbers from being vastly worse and keep the hospitals from being overwhelmed. Newsom took the lead nationally in 2020 to keep his state's citizens protected, no easy task in a constantly changing pandemic with anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers hounding his every move.
